Every year, National Nutrition Week (9–15 October) makes South Africans aware of the importance good nutrition plays in our health, productivity, and quality of life from childhood to old age, and to encourage healthier eating habits as a nation.

For 2025, the theme is “Food for Health, Health for All”. This theme highlights an important fact: access to nutritious, safe, and affordable food is a basic human right. Good nutrition leads to a healthier community and a more productive nation.

The triple burden of malnutrition in South Africa

South Africa has a nutritional issue known as the “triple burden of malnutrition.” This means the country is dealing with three major issues at the same time: undernutrition (such as stunting and wasting), micronutrient deficiencies caused by a lack of vital vitamins and minerals, and an increase in overweight and obesity.

Many households rely on cheap, high-starch, ultra-processed foods because healthy food is either too expensive or difficult to access. This creates a dangerous cycle of low energy, weakened immunity, chronic illnesses, and reduced productivity.

Nutrition challenges in the mining and industry sector

Poor nutrition affects everyone, but in the mining and industrial sectors, the risks are even higher. Workers do physically challenging, high-risk tasks, often on long shifts and irregular schedules. What they eat directly impacts their safety, alertness, and performance.

Most workers don’t consume enough fruits and vegetables because healthier meals aren’t always available. Instead, they rely mostly on cheap, starchy staple foods, which leads to fatigue and nutrient deficiencies.

Because ultra-processed convenience foods are quick and accessible, they are frequently consumed. After a short energy spike provided by these sugary snacks and drinks, you’re inevitably met with an energy crash that impacts focus and performance.

Even when workers want to make healthier choices, affordability and availability often don’t allow them to. Healthier options are often more expensive or simply not available on-site, which leaves workers with limited access to the food (and more importantly, nutrition) they need to stay energised and healthy during their challenging shifts.

All of these issues increase the risk of fatigue, more accidents, absenteeism, chronic illness, and long-term health costs for both workers and employers.

How Back to Basics Nutrition makes a difference

That’s why our range of dietician-developed supplementary, meal-replacement and sustained-energy drinks, and high-protein bars is made specifically for shift workers and high-performance teams.

This September is Heart Awareness Month in South Africa, ending with World Heart Day on the 29th. Therefore, we have decided not to skip a beat; instead, we are getting to the heart of the matter by giving one of the most vital organs the attention it deserves.

How much do we really understand about our heart health, and are we doing enough to protect it? Cardiovascular disease refers to conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels, including heart attacks, strokes, and hypertension (high blood pressure). Over time, poor lifestyle habits such as an unhealthy diet, smoking, lack of exercise, and unmanaged stress damage the blood vessels, increase cholesterol buildup and strain the heart.

In South Africa, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death, after HIV/AIDS. The encouraging news, however, is that there are several ways to prevent and manage this disease effectively.

While the working class is at a higher risk of being affected by the symptoms that cause heart issues, we continue to raise awareness about how everyday choices can either protect or put pressure on your cardiovascular system. In physically demanding industries like mining and shift work, where long hours, irregular eating patterns, and dehydration are common, the risks escalate even more.

This is where Back to Basics – Nutrition provides valuable support, with products and recipes that help stabilise blood sugar, and essential vitamins and minerals that combat fatigue and low energy. The tools for a stronger heart are within reach. Combined with lifestyle changes like regular exercise, quality sleep, and routine health checks, these products can help mining and shift workers safeguard their most vital organs against unnecessary stress.

National Women’s Day on August 9th is now behind us; however, the broader celebration of Women throughout August is still amongst us. This still provides a meaningful opportunity to honour the resilience, strength and contributions of women in South Africa’s workforce, particularly in demanding industries like mining and manufacturing. Irregular hours and physical demands associated with shift work significantly impact women’s well-being and focus, leading to issues such as fatigue and nutritional deficiencies.

However, at Back to Basics – Nutrition, we empower women to thrive in these environments – starting with nutrition. Through our commitment to addressing women’s health in environments that often overlook these needs, we have established ourselves, collaborating with food scientists and dieticians, to create products designed with women in mind.

The Demands of Shift Work on Women’s Health

Over the past few decades, women have made remarkable progress in mining and construction, filling roles traditionally dominated by men, such as operators, engineers, supervisors and managers, among others. Yet, shift work often takes a toll on their health due to night shifts, long hours, and physically intensive tasks. Irregular schedules disrupt circadian rhythms, leading to fatigue, stress and poor dietary habits. This, in turn, may lead to elevated risks of obesity, cardiovascular issues and diabetes.

We approach these strenuous realities with practical solutions such as our Premium Fatigue Packs, which are geared towards sustaining women through these demanding shifts. Products that are quick and easy to consume ensure that women have all the wholesome nutrients they need to maintain a constant workflow.

Nutrition As a Foundation for Resilience

As we continue to celebrate the unbreakable spirit of women in labour-intensive industries and recognise nutrition as the foundation for their resilience, we are conscious that a balanced, nutrient-dense diet is critical for women in these roles. Foods that include low-GI carbohydrates, fibre and essential vitamins and minerals provide sustained energy, preventing the crashes that come with sugary energy drinks and oily, processed food.

Our convenient, on-the-go solutions are designed to neatly and unobtrusively fit into their hectic schedules, delivering the nutrients that women require for mental clarity and effective physical stamina. We prioritise nutrition because poor nutrition in shift work is a leading cause of serious health risks, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, which can impact women’s long-term health and career longevity. In fact, South Africa has one of the highest obesity rates in the world, further highlighting the need for better, more effective nutrition as a foundation. This is where we come in with our stimulant-free products to help regulate blood sugar, improve gut health, and boost immunity, reducing absenteeism and enhancing workplace performance.

For example, a nutrient-dense snack can provide the mental clarity needed to operate heavy machinery safely or the stamina to complete a 12-hour shift. By addressing these health risks, our products empower women to stay healthy and excel in high-risk environments like mines or construction sites.

As a parting thought, we’re reminded of Maya Angelou’s powerful words: “Each time a woman stands up for herself, she stands up for all women.” By prioritising nutrition and health, women in mining and industrial sectors are not only uplifting themselves but also empowering other women to uplift themselves and thrive. Back to Basics Nutrition is proud to support this journey, providing the tools women need to overcome challenges and excel in their roles.

Mandela Day, as most South Africans know, is a day to turn your attention towards the person, community, or organisation next to you and inspire change for the better. It’s a day to celebrate the life and achievements of Nelson Mandela, for just 67 minutes. This year, Back to Basics Nutrition is proud to partner with E2G (Eat-2-Grow), a passionate social enterprise that is fighting hunger at its root with scalable, transparent and locally-led nutrition systems.

Eat-2-Grow FOOD

Analyses done by Eat-2-Grow show that over 800 million people go to bed hungry every night. However, this hunger can’t be satisfied with just any food – people require hearty, healthy nutrition that both sustains and empowers. It has been observed that the nutritional quality of emergency food tends to be nutritionally poor, and struggles to reduce food insecurity. In other words, emergency food is often a lifeline for those in dire straits; however, its poor nutritional value does little to improve their health and overall nourishment.

Eat-2-Grow began as a social enterprise aimed at providing an alternative to the limitations of emergency food (limitations such as requiring cooking, water, providing glucose spikes, or not reaching the right community). This alternative was found in SuperFOOD Power Bars – a high protein, nutrient-dense bar that is fast, scalable and provides sustainable relief. Eat-2-Grow partners with local partners to understand which communities need them the most.

If you’re looking to get in shape, lose weight, or simply maintain a healthy lifestyle, it can be challenging to know where to start. With so many fad diets, supplements, and workout programs on the market, it’s easy to get lost in the noise. That’s why Back to Basics – Nutrition is here to help.

Back to Basics – Nutrition is a company that provides nutritional products and programs to help people achieve their health and fitness goals. With a focus on nutritious, high-quality ingredients, Back to Basics – Nutrition aims to help its clients achieve optimal health through a back-to-basics approach.

One of the most inspiring success stories from Back to Basics – Nutrition comes from Mrs Riana Peyper. A teacher who has always been health-conscious, Riana was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of 2018. After undergoing mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, Riana had to continue treatment by using Tamoxifen as adjuvant therapy for a further 5 years, until the end of March 2024. Unfortunately, one of the negative side effects of the treatment was gaining weight involuntarily. Despite her best efforts to exercise and eat healthily, Riana gained 23kg in the four years since her diagnosis.

In October 2022, Riana was introduced to Back to Shape, a program offered by Back to Basics – Nutrition. The results speak for themselves: in just 28 weeks, Riana lost 17 kg in weight, dropped 10% in body fat percentage, lost 20.5kg of body fat mass, and increased her muscle mass by 5.8kg. Even her visceral fat dropped from 12 to 9.

Riana’s success story is a testament to the efficacy of Back to Basics – Nutrition’s products and programs. But what sets Back to Basics – Nutrition apart from other health and wellness companies? For starters, the company’s products are made from natural, high-quality ingredients. Back to Basics – Nutrition’s High Protein Supa Shake, for example, is a low GI, vegan-friendly shake enriched with vitamins and minerals. The High Protein Supa Shake is ideal for people undergoing treatment for the following conditions: ADHD, burns, chronic constipation and/or diarrhoea, coeliac disease, HIV/AIDS, IBS, tuberculosis and more.

Another unique aspect of Back to Basics – Nutrition is the company’s focus on simplicity. The company’s products are designed to be easy to use and incorporate into your daily routine. For example, the Supa Soup is a protein and vitamin-enriched savoury drink that sustains energy, prevents dehydration, and boosts immune systems. It’s perfect for ensuring stable blood sugar levels when you don’t have time for a meal.

But perhaps the most significant advantage of Back to Basics – Nutrition is the company’s personalised approach. Back to Shape, the program that helped Riana, is a personalised weight loss program that takes into account each client’s unique needs and goals. By working with a qualified dietician, clients can develop a customised plan that fits their lifestyle and helps them achieve their goals.

Overall, Back to Basics – Nutrition is a company that is dedicated to helping people achieve optimal health and wellness through natural, high-quality products and personalised programs. With a focus on simplicity, transparency, and efficacy, Back to Basics – Nutrition is a refreshing alternative to the noise and confusion of the health and wellness industry. So if you’re looking to get back to basics and achieve your health and fitness goals, give Back to Basics – Nutrition a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Back to Basics – Nutrition is a company that is dedicated to helping people maintain their physical and mental well-being. That’s why we are proud to have supported the Scouts South Africa Team in the recent 94.7 Ride cycle challenge. The team of 50 riders participated in the event on November 20th, 2022, and our products were included in their goodie bags to help keep them fueled and energized throughout the ride.

The importance of maintaining energy levels during a grueling sports event like the 94.7 Ride cannot be overstated. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or simply looking to improve your fitness, it’s crucial to have a source of sustained energy release that will keep you going for hours on end. That’s where Back to Basics – Nutrition comes in. Our range of nutritional supplements and meal replacements is designed to help you stay energized and alert, no matter what challenges you may face during your journey.

For the riders participating in the 94.7 Ride, Back to Basics – Nutrition provided them with Supa Shakes and Supa Energy drinks. These products are the result of 20 years of research into fatigue management solutions, and they offer sustained energy release over a period of 3 to 4 hours. This means that you won’t experience the typical sugar crashes that come with high-GI, sugar-based drinks and bars. Instead, you’ll be able to easily power through even the toughest of rides.

If you’re looking to take your fitness to the next level, consider incorporating Back to Basics’ products into your routine. For example, you could start your ride with a Supa Shake to peak your energy levels, and then sip it throughout the day to keep your energy levels up. If you get hungry during the ride, you could reach for a Back to Basics High Energy Protein Bar for a balanced and nutritious snack.

Finally, we are proud to announce that Back to Basics will continue to be involved in future sporting events and initiatives that promote health and wellness. We believe that everyone deserves to live a healthy and active life, and we are committed to helping people achieve their fitness goals. Whether you’re participating in a ride like the 94.7, or simply looking to improve your health, Back to Basics – Nutrition has the products and the expertise to help you succeed.

So don’t wait any longer. Start your journey to a healthier and more active life with Back to Basics – Nutrition today!

“Sport is friendship;
Sport is health,
Sport is education,
Sport is life,
Sport brings the world together.”

Juan Antonio Samaranch

These famous words were once again brought to life on 12th of June 2018 when ex-proffesional footballer and conservationist Gordon Gilbert partnered with the Legend African Foundation on a soccer clinic at Kaalleegte Primary. Having an actual football star present in the Sterkrivier district of Limpopo is a sight not often seen (if ever) and it was evident on the faces of teachers and learners who could simply not get enough of the soccer wisdom imparted by Gordon.

This specific soccer clinic was not the typical clinic, seeing that not only Gordon and the team from the Legend African Foundation were present but also a tour group consisting of Americans, British and Chinese on their very first visit to South Africa. They had the opportunity to witness first hand why soccer is classified as a religion in South Africa and also why raising awareness on conservation in the local communities are vital. One tourist explained “I was so impressed by the passion and discipline in which the soccer clinics were presented by Gordon”, while another commented “I am not quite sure how the children were able to understand this Scotsman but he certainly has a way of getting the conservation message across.”

An initiative such as this brings hope to a community and makes a dream feel more real than ever before. Obviously the end goal is for children to improve their soccer skills and become aware of the importance of their natural heritage. But for now, until this is achieved, Gordon is doing something far greater – he is showing a community how to overcome circumstance, become self-confident and how to dream wilder, bigger dreams. He is building a brighter Africa, one soccer clinic at a time.

Adam Maroko is an active trail runner who is always trying to improve his running time so that he can build his brand in encouraging others who come from the same back ground that they can also achieve big in life.

Since Adam has been educated on good nutrition and started using Supa Shake and Supa Energy from Back to Basics Nutrition SA as a supplement for his training, he has improved his running time and his eating habits.

We all know that good nutrition results in good performance. And this was exactly what happened with Adam.

He is a very strong and skilful runner and enjoys challenging himself on longer distances like Marathons and Ultras.

In his spare time, Adam trains underprivileged children from his community in Krugersdorp to become very good runners. Adam has been training the children for a long time and he studies each and every one to understand their behaviour. He determines in their performance and behaviour when they are having good days and when the training is a bit harder.

He needs to know what the children’s abilities are so he can strengthen them and know their weaknesses to improve them.

Ultimately he wants to help these children develop into great athletes and to encourage them to achieve better in life.

For Adam, the children he trains are his life. They all have loads fun times together and the children are all very entertaining with their own personalities during training sessions. Many of the children he previously worked with have achieved provincial colours in representing Central Gauteng at the South African league.

Just to mention a view of the achievement some of the current children training with Adam have achieved.

Koketso Thejanea was selected for schools to represent the CSA Track & Field (Clarksburg Sport Association) for girls under 11-12 age group.

Thabiso Pheto was selected to represent Gauteng at Regional’s and for the schools in Provincial. He also won the RockMans Trail Run and broke the record by doing it the fastest time ever.

Reatlegile Mosweu was selected twice for CGA (Central Gauteng Athletics) and won most of the races in his age category for boys under 12-13 age group. In 2016 he came 4th at the South African Champs. In 2017 he was second overall in South African Champs. He was also the winner of the RockMans Trail run for his age category.

Thabo Mogotsi is still very young but he is following in his cousin’s footsteps and qualified for the South African Championship and the Schools Championship.

Shaun Mththwa represented Gauteng at SA Championship 2017 and will be representing schools for Track & field in Potchefstroom 2017.

This group of children won the award for the most promising up-and-coming younger athletes and Adam is very proud to be the coach of such determined children who want to make a difference in their community and in themselves.

When training a group of children like this takes loads of time and patients which Adam does have and is happy to do. But you also need to allow these children to compete in various events.

TrailAdventure and TradeUniPoint have made it possible for the children by allowing them to run at no cast at all the events and even helping them with transport to some of the events.

This helps the children to develop their competitive instinct and because it is in a different setting as their normal training venue it allows them to develop other skills which in the end improve their performance as young athletes. However, due to transport limitations Adam is not always able to take the children to the events and hopes to get a vehicle donated for his training school that can be used to transport the children and himself to the events.

Adam is also in the process of applying for a Non-Profit Organizations Number for his training school to help collect food donations for the children to help them achieve adequate nutrition for development and training.

TrailAdventure has helped a lot with the children by getting Sketchers to give them shoes to run with and TradUniPoint for running shirts. Now they do not have to run barefoot anymore.

The children are our future and Adam gives them his time and effort to help them improve their living, change their surroundings and change their lives so they can become what they want to be.

Adam does all of this because of the love he has for his community and says: “I was thought that giving back to the community is the best thing you can do.”

As a dietician I know that good nutrition forms part of your daily life and that an athlete who competes in regular activities needs adequate nutrition to improve performance. I met Adam Maroko at a Trail Adventure race. At 39 year of age, Adam is an exceptionally good trail and cross country runner and wins most of his races.

Now you noticed I mentioned most of the races; that’s because Adam allows his students to win in some races to improve their talent as runners. Yes, Adam is a running coach and a very good one.

He and his team at Developing Coaches for Kagiso, Soweto are very determined to take the development of the community to higher places and their aim is to see more kids in their community take part and better their lives and the lives of their families.

Their goal is to change children through sports and help improve the community.

When I talk about children I am referring to the children of Kagiso Extension 12 in the Western area called Mogale City. These kids come from rural areas and they have limited resources. Adam and his team are creating opportunities and developing talent among these children to improve their lives and their futures.

The children are embracing these opportunities with open hands and they are focusing on developing their talent. They have a purpose. Some of these children have represented Central Gauteng in the Provincial Championships in George and Cape Town.

Adam and his team volunteer their time within school development to train more future athletes. They have a very strict training schedule in which the Development Coaches train with the kids during the week and on weekends they compete.

However there are limitations due to financial constraints. Some of the children used to run bare foot, but with the help of Shane Gouldie from Trail Adventure and Skechers, many of the children have running shoes now.

Trail Adventure have also donated running shirts to all 32 kids, Adam and his team of trainers. Back to Basics Nutrition South Africa also helped by providing all the kids with running caps and buffs which was especially helpful in the cold winter mornings before the races started.

The Development Coaches would like to provide more opportunities for the children to be able to run at trail and cross country running events but unfortunately travelling costs are preventing the team from competing.

For that reason Adam runs to win most of the races, not just to improve his running time and stay fit, but to win the prize money so that he can pay for travelling costs to take the children to the events.

“Children are our future and we need to let them run.” – Adam Maroko

As I got to know Adam better, I saw that he always strives to improve his time and has made the team to run for South Africa. He is an exceptional runner with amazing talent and I am his Dietician helping him with food and sports nutrition.

For the last month I have been working with Adam to improve his nutritional intake with the goal to improve his running time and maintain good health. I developed a very cost effective meal plan for Adam which suited his training schedule. Back To Basics Nutrition South Africa supported by providing Adam with supplementary pre- and post shakes and energy drinks for his events.

I am pleased to report that Adam has improved his running time during competition and training. Last weekend he competed in the Central Gauteng Cross Country Race and he made the South African Team…Proper nutrition for improved performance.

The Mufulira/Mopani 7’s Rugby Tournament took place on the 4 – 6 August in Zambia.

This annual event is organised by Mopani Copper Mines and is sponsored by them together with other suppliers.

With teams coming from as far as South Africa to compete in the event, not only for prize money but also for the opportunity to compete in such a special event in the middle of Africa.

This was a really fun event for both the players and spectators with not only the good rugby by day but evening events that lasted late into the night for three days nonstop.

Zambians really showed the visitors their hospitality and how to have a good time on and off the field.

Nuco Industrial Services had a stall at the event where we promoted the Supa Energy and Supa Shake nutritional products we recently launched in Zambia.

A year ago Nuco Industrial Services secured a miners feeding contract with mining company Murray & Roberts which is now entering the second year and has had great results and acceptance from the workers. These workers are mainly underground and are subjected to harsh working conditions and high humid temperatures. The Shake and the Energy drink are well suited to this environment.

The aim of our participation was to create awareness amongst players and the general public.

For the event Nuco Industrial Services sponsored the three top teams with shaker bottles each and a pack of Shakes and Energy drinks for the teams and coaching staff.

The other 17 teams were given packs of Supa Energy for two days at the point of registration on day one. The comments received were awesome and we had a lot of players coming to buy more packs as the days got longer and longer.

7s rugby is energy sapping stuff and teams had to play three games a day for the first two days.

At our very colourful stand, compliments to Back to Basics nutrition, we had on offer tasting of products and sales of shaker bottles , Supa Energy and Supa Shake sachets. The products were very popular and we were still selling late on the third day. The sales and acceptance were so encouraging that we are already making plans for other events.

During the event we had lots on enquiries of people from as far as Lusaka and even the Golden Lions that want to buy the products. We will be following these up to see how we can grow the brand. All in all this was a very good event, ideally suited for this product range and I am very pleased with the end result.

Well done all !

Managing Director – Nuco Industrial Services
